When you hear the name Mo Vaughn, what do you think? Power. Home runs. Big guy. It’s been a while since we have heard Vaughn’s name pop up. At 49, he’s alive and well and has finally entered the social media world. We need to get his follower count up. Give him a follow on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

A major reason for the entrance to the world of social media is his new big and tall menswear apparel company, MVP Collections. The former three-time MLB All-Star and 1995 AL MVP joined me on The Jake Brown Show to explain why he started the clothing line.

“It was for the guy who really couldn’t find any style or fashion in that space. It’s a white space, nobody is in it,” said Vaughn. I was actually the customer going out looking for clothes and looking for different things and couldn’t find them. This was something that was a need. We have been on e-com for nine weeks and we’re trying to listen to the customer. It’s important to hit us on social media so we can figure out the needs of the customer and really hit the bullseye. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

Vaughn has been a businessman since he left the big leagues in 2003, and he looked at this as another need.

“I’m thinking about needs. I got into the affordable housing business when I retired. It was a need in the city of New York that has expanded now nationally. I got into transportation out in Cleveland where I live. It’s a need. I thought it was a need. There was a complete white space and nobody knew about it. It’s new. That’s how this whole thing evolved.”

Vaughn had quite the run with the Red Sox from 1991-1998. He became the face of the team during that time. Playing in Boston with the spotlight always on was no easy task.

“I don’t care if the Celtics, Bruins, Patriots win championships, there’s nothing like baseball in Boston,” said Vaughn. “It was a very tough place to play when you don’t win. The fans, the media, everybody is taking it personal. David Ortiz came to New England and took the bull by the horns, really made his place, his stake into Boston history. Three world championships. When they won in 2004, I couldn’t be happier. It took the weight off my shoulders.”

The former slugger also explained what happened exactly at the end of his time in Boston.

“As you get older, more mature, you go through things,” Vaughn said. “Would you have one of your employers or your ballplayers talking the trash that I was talking to Boston probably not and still have a job, you wouldn’t. You learn that as you get older. You’re never going to win a fight with the media, you’re never going to win a fight through the media. If I was just a little bit smarter I’d probably be sitting there right now. Things happen and you learn from it. The Red Sox new ownership is about winning world championships. They have put it together. We have got three in a decade. The ownership in Boston is tremendous to ex-ballplayers. They come back and treat you well and it’s great.”
