The 1998 Atlanta Falcons team was the only one in franchise history to get to the Super Bowl…until now. The 2016 Falcons will take on the New England Patriots Sunday in Houston for Super Bowl LI. Former Falcons wide receiver Terance Mathis joined me on The Jake Brown Show on Play.it to compare his team that reached the Super Bowl and lost, to this squad.
“It’s been very special after week 10 I’ve seen something special in this team it was comparable to the 1998 team,” said Mathis. “Matt Ryan has matured and become one of the top five quarterbacks in the league today and the thing is Dan Quinn has him playing at a different level, they’re playing for each other, they love each other, they look out for each other. I just love watching this team play.”
Quinn has led the Falcons to a Super Bowl in just his second year as a NFL head coach. Another Dan led the way as well in the 1998 season. That would be Dan Reeves. Mathis believes both are very similar.
“Well I don’t see any difference,” said Mathis. “I tell people you have a player’s coach, when you have a player’s coach who treats players like men and lets them own the team, it’s their team and that’s what Dan Reeves did for us. It’s your team, you police your team and we’re gonna just give you what we think would help you be successful and you just go out and execute and have fun doing it. That’s what Dan Quinn is doing with this team.”
The city of Atlanta has not had the best luck in the sports world. The Braves are the only team that has won a title. The city is starving for another.
“It’s a family. It’s really family and this is a city that’s starving for a champion and it’s been a long time since there’s been a champion in this city it’s been since the Braves years ago so this city is starving for a champion and they want success, they want something to brag about,” said Mathis. “It’s strange to say it it’s an old cliché, it’s like the Atlanta fanbase against everybody else because there’s people out there up until playoff time that the Falcons weren’t getting any attention everybody was talking about the other elite teams in the league and the Falcons were just going about their business doing what they’re supposed to do and then here we are.”
The Patriots have become a NFL dynasty and one of the best organizations in sports…but it might be time for a new team to take over.
“The Patriots are the old guard,” Mathis said. “It’s time for a new guard and it’s time for another franchise to step up and be the poster child of the NFL and I can see the Atlanta Falcons doing that.”
