The Cleveland Browns have named rookie second-round draft pick DeShone Kizer their starting quarterback over Brock Osweiler.

Heath Evans’ response? Whoa. Slow down. Think this through.

“I think the falloff from the 1s to the 2s and 3s now in preseason is so drastic,” the NFL Network analyst said on CBS Sports Radio’s Tiki and Tierney. “The football goes from A, B+ preseason football to F-minus football so fast because these young kids are so stunted by the college offense and defense now.”

Kizer has looked good in the preseason, but again, it’s preseason.

“I think Hue (Jackson) really wants to see what Kizer’s going to look like versus the 1 speed,” Evans said. “To me, he was antsy in the pocket versus the 2s and the 3s. I think he believes Brock is the starter. I think he’s just trying to see if Kizer is anywhere close to being ready to play. We’ll see. It’s a big contract, but a year removed, there was 15 other teams that would have paid that same contract for Brock Osweiler.”

Osweiler, 26, is guaranteed $16 million this season as part of the four-year, $72-million deal he signed with the Texans in 2016. Osweiler, though, was highly unimpressive last year, throwing for 2,957 yards, 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 15 games. He is now on his third team in as many seasons.

Still, Evans does not believe Osweiler is a lost cause, especially since John Elway reportedly offered Osweiler a three-year, $45-million deal last March.

“John Elway is no idiot,” Evans said. “John knew what Brock was capable of. There was a whole bunch of teams that would have loved to have signed Brock last year and it just didn’t work out. Billy O (Bill O’Brien) is a tough coach to play for. He’s very demanding of you mentally and emotionally and some people can’t blend with that. He railed us hard in New England and a lot of guys didn’t like it.

“So I think Hue and his temperament might be a much better fix for Brock,” Evans continued. “It’s just been hard to judge what Brock can offer that team because of that offensive line. You’ve got the best left tackle (Joe Thomas) in the game that hasn’t been out there. There’s a few other boys that have been missing. I don’t know how Hue would look at Kizer’s tape so far and be like, ‘Oh, this guy looks like a starting NFL quarterback.’ Not me yet.”
