The AL East sure looks like it may have to go through the Bronx. The Yankees only got better with the addition of Giancarlo Stanton, and it’s going to make the division that much more difficult to win.

One of those teams in the division is the Tampa Bay Rays. Rays outfielder Steven Souza Jr. joined Tiki And Tierney to talk about the Stanton trade and being a smaller market team.

“I thought Starlin Castro was a great hitter, maybe even one of the best hitters on that team. You’re taking him away and adding a lot of power, the MVP,” said Souza. “They could hit 150 homers and be the best team. He is one of the best players in our sport right now. It’s a hard thing to swallow when you’re in a smaller market, knowing we don’t have a chance to do that. It’s fun knowing that with the guys that we have, I think we can do something and compete. It’s just part of the business. It’s not like the NFL where the whole ground is kind of even.

“The Yankees have a higher up then we do and the A’s and this weird market, and even the Astros had to go through some different stuff. I think you just become adjusted to the mentality of that way and your situation, and you have to let chips fall where they may, and the hand you are dealt, you got to play it. We’re not the Yankees, so we got to go into the season and try to win the World Series with the situation we have.”

In other offseason moves, Shohei Ohtani is headed to the Angels. Questions continue to arise on Ohtani’s role and if can be a pitcher and a hitter.

“It sounds like he’s going to pitch every five days, and the days he’s not pitching, he’s going to play a position,” Souza said. “What I understood further is that he never actually played every single day as a position player. He just kind of pinch hit and played every now and then. If that’s the case then I can kind of see it happening. It’s such a different schedule. Tanaka had to adjust to playing every single day of the week. They don’t play every single day of the week over there. There’s a different dynamic to your conditioning. To be able to get ready for your start, it takes them four days to prepare for that start. If he can do it, it’s going to be unbelievable. It’s going to be really difficult. If anybody can do it, he’s got the skills to do it.”
