Rice on 49ers: Watson is a “Ferrari,” could be missing piece

As the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions have already shown, several NFL teams will likely have a new starting quarterback in 2021.

It'll be interesting to see what the San Francisco 49ers do, especially given Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury history. Garoppolo has missed at least 10 games in three of his four seasons with San Francisco.

“If they decide to go a different direction, I would say Deshaun Watson,” Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice said on The Zach Gelb Show, when asked about a potential new Niners QB. “That’s where the game is going: more of a mobile quarterback that can run, that can extend plays downfield like a Russell Wilson and these other quarterbacks.”

Given Stafford’s price tag, Watson wouldn’t be cheap. In fact, he could cost three or four first-round draft picks. Is he worth it?

Rice says yes.

“If you got that Ferrari out there, man, that’s that missing piece that’s going to get you back to the Super Bowl,” he said. “You got to go for it.”
