Tiki & Tierney: Dolphins Shouldn't Trade Up For Joe Burrow

With the NFL Draft rapidly approaching, there is speculation that the Miami Dolphins could try to trade up from No. 5 to No. 1 to take Joe Burrow

Tiki Barber and Brandon Tierney would advise against that, mainly because it would cost an absolute haul to do so.

“If you’re the Miami Dolphins and you trade some draft equity and you go up and get Joe Burrow but you can’t surround him with enough talent, isn’t it defeating the purpose?” Barber asked on Tiki & Tierney. “If I’m Miami, there’s no way I’m going that high, especially for what it would cost to give up. Maybe I go [up] a few slots to make sure I get Tua [Tagovailoa] or [Justin] Herbert, but I’m not going all the way up to No. 1 and giving up [the draft capital it would require].”

Tierney feels the same way.

“I wouldn’t either, but for a little bit of a different reason,” he said. “Not because of what might not be around that player that I move mountains to get; I just don’t love the player enough to move the mountains to go and pursue that player. I like Joe. I think Joe Burrow is going to be a good pro. He could be really good. Or he could just be good. You don’t give up multiple first-round picks, which is what it will require to get that, for somebody who’s [just] good.”

Unfortunately for Miami, the non-Burrow quarterbacks carry more risk. Tagovailoa’s injury history is well-documented, while Herbert is far from a sure thing.

“I don’t trust the kid,” Tierney said of Herbert. “I’m sorry. I don’t trust him. They might take him No. 5. I wouldn’t take him at 5.”

Jordan Love could be an option, but he’s risky, too, especially given how much his production declined from 2018 to 2019.

“There’s no way I’m taking him inside the top 10,” Tierney said. “He’s a complete crapshoot. Who knows which player you get?”

Ultimately, if the Dolphins believe Burrow is a legit franchise quarterback, they should make a play for him. But they can’t sell the farm in the process.

“If you really believe with the strongest football conviction that Joe Burrow is the guy, go into the coffers, take multiple first-round picks and make it happen,” Tierney said. “If you believe it.”
